Etsy's fee structure has four layers that every seller must account for when pricing products. Unlike eBay or Amazon where fees are primarily a single percentage, Etsy stacks multiple fees that can add up to 10-25% of your sale total depending on whether offsite advertising is involved.
Listing fee ($0.20): Charged when you list or renew an item, and again when you sell one (auto-renewal). Small per-item but adds up with high-volume shops. Transaction fee (6.5%): Charged on the total sale amount including shipping. This is Etsy's main commission. Payment processing (3% + $0.25): Covers credit card processing through Etsy Payments. Offsite advertising (12-15%): Only charged when a sale results from an Etsy offsite ad on Google, Facebook, or Pinterest.
A common formula is: Price = (COGS + Labor + Shipping + Packaging) / (1 - Total Fee Rate). For a standard Etsy sale without offsite ads, the total fee rate is approximately 10% (6.5% + 3% + $0.25 + $0.20). If your total costs are $20, price at $20 / 0.90 = $22.22 minimum. For items with good margins, price 2-3x your cost to maintain healthy profitability.
Offsite advertising can significantly impact profitability — adding 12-15% on top of standard fees. Sellers with less than $10,000 in annual revenue can opt out. Larger sellers cannot opt out but pay the lower 12% rate. When calculating your prices, consider that some percentage of sales will come through offsite ads, and price your products accordingly to maintain profitability even on offsite ad sales.
